Have you ever wondered if your snoring could be damaging to your health? For many, snoring indicates a sleep-breathing condition known as sleep apnea. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. Snoring results from constricted airways that prevent airflow, and when your body doesn’t receive enough oxygen, it can cause a host of problems, including memory loss, fatigue, and depression. Fortunately, Dr. Striebel offers a simple solution that eliminates snoring and opens airways for many patients.
What is the difference between snoring and sleep apnea?
Snoring results when airways are partially blocked by the tongue or other soft-tissues in the mouth or throat. Air forces its way through and results in the noisy vibrations we know as snoring. Sleep apnea results when patients’ airways are completely blocked for 10 seconds or longer. The patient actually stops breathing several times throughout the night before the body awakens and gasps for air. Sleep apnea prevents a restful night’s sleep and has been linked to heart disease, stroke, and even premature death.
What are my treatment options?
Traditional treatment for snoring and sleep apnea involves a facial mask and a CPAP machine. While effective, the CPAP machine often proves too noisy and cumbersome for many people to tolerate. As an alternative, Dr. Striebel can create a custom-designed snoreguard. This treatment has proven highly effective and patients typically have little trouble adjusting to the snoreguard. In extreme cases, patients may require surgery to remove excessive throat tissue. After an evaluation, Dr. Striebel can determine whether you suffer from sleep apnea and recommend the appropriate treatment.
